[via telepathy] Eugene Allerton: I’m not queer
Story
In the 1950s in Mexico City, an American emigrant aged about forty lives a lonely life in a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student prompts the man to finally establish a meaningful connection with someone.. Daniel Craig eventually convinced Luca Guadagnino to take on the role of Drew Starkey after watching the tapes of auditions with Guadagnino and telling him “That’s the guy” when he saw Starkey.. Lee…
Eugene Allerton: I am bodiless
I’m not queer.William Lee: I know. Starring: Orpheus (1950). I’ve never seen Naked Dinner (1991), but I thought about it a lot during the screening of Queer at the 2024 London Film Festival: probably, this should be expected, since William S. Burroughs provided the source material for both films.
But what does Eugene himself want?
In the 1950s in Mexico, William Lee, an American writer in his early…forties? Fifty? He spends his days getting drunk, carousing and having casual sex with other men. One day, a muscular, smart, handsome young man, Eugene, walks into a bar, and Lee falls in love.
Plus there’s this telepathic drug to think about
I’m not sure what stylistically director Luca Guadagnino is trying to achieve with this film. The sets are done almost exclusively in blocky colors — dull reds and olive greens, for example — and have that vaguely unrealistic, clean, colorful look that made me think the film’s purpose was to pay homage to the films of the era in which the film is set. . But if that’s the case, why is it clearly not a rock and techno soundtrack of the 1950s?
It was possible to watch it once, but I will not watch it again
Daniel Craig (I think, or is he starting to look like Sid James?) is shackled in the main role, constantly reciting meaningless speeches with an accent that is clearly not his own. Drew Starkey is able to give a more nuanced performance as Eugene’s manipulator and certainly looks like a cool guy. Leslie Manville is unrecognizable in the role of a doctor living in the South American jungle – well done makeup artists! This is the type of film that impresses me more with its artistic style than its narrative content.
