Adaptation of James Patterson’s series of novels about the complicated and brilliant detective Alex Cross
Hodge is the third actor to play Cross, following in the footsteps of Morgan Freeman, who first played him on screen in 1997’s Kiss the Girls and again in the 2001 sequel Along Came a Spider; and Tyler Perry as the titular character in 2012’s Alex Cross, which bombed at the box office and led Lionsgate to scrap the pre-planned sequel Double Cross. Story-wise, I enjoyed this series and have been a fan of Aldis since the first episode of Leverage.
My biggest complaint is the dark cinematography. So much fog I sometimes found distracting…

They can be out there with blue skies at noon and yet they still found a way to make it look dark… Other than that, I’ll refrain from spoiling the ending, but it kind of went off the rails and then tried too hard to tie up every loose end possible…

This is the second time Paul Schrader has directed one of Banks’ novels for the screen, following his adaptation of ‘Affliction’ (1997).
Featured on the Movie Junk Podcast: Episode 961: In a Violent Nature + TIFF 2024 (2024). Oh, CANADA is a very original film by one of the masters of cinema, a true work of art.
The film is beautifully crafted with a strong visual look. The acting is strong, especially Richard Gere who plays the title character.
It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it’s one of Paul Schrader’s greatest achievements and a gift to film lovers. Recommended.
